Driving in Rain

Driving in the rain requires special attention to road and traffic conditions as well as for the student driver. The following rules apply to driving on wet pavement and in the rain:

  1. Slow the vehicle to a safe speed. A driver can be issued a traffic citation even when driving at the posted speed limit. It under 316.183 (a) “Speed to Great for Conditions”
  2. Turn on the headlights and windshield wipers.
  3. Increase following distance.

The road is most dangerous and slippery when the rain first begins. This is when oil and water mixes. Vehicles can very easily hydroplane at low speeds. If rain is extremely heavy and the windshield wipers can’t remove water quickly enough, find a safe place to stop until the rain subsides
